Snapshots Straight to Your Brain
Seeing is far more than a simple mechanical process. It is an optical, chemical, and above all neural one. Roughly a quarter of the brain—and nearly 60 percent of the cerebral cortex, the seat of higher cognitive functions—is devoted to processing the constant stream of information delivered by our eyes through the optic nerve.
This transmission and simultaneous processing of visual data happen at remarkable speed. On average, signals travel along the optic nerve at about 28 mph (45 km/h), or roughly 5 to 20 meters (16 to 66 feet) per second, reaching the visual cortex almost instantly. There, the brain immediately begins filtering, analyzing, and interpreting what initially arrives as a chaotic mass of raw data.
Fast Thinking and Slow Thinking
Psychologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman explores the speed of neural information processing—and the extent to which our thinking depends on visual perception—in his groundbreaking book Thinking, Fast and Slow. Kahneman distinguishes between two modes of thought. He calls the first System 1: our fast, unconscious, intuitive mode of thinking. System 1 operates automatically, is emotionally driven, and relies heavily on patterns and stereotypes. It is always active and closely intertwined with what we perceive and what we see.Alongside this, Kahneman describes a second mode of thinking: System 2. This system is slower, deliberate, analytical, and logical. It requires conscious effort and is considerably more mentally demanding than System 1. Whenever we perceive something visually, these two systems compete with one another. Kahneman illustrates this beautifully with a simple optical illusion.

"The picture is not remarkable: two horizontal lines of different lengths (...). The lower one appears longer than the one above it. We all see that, and we naturally believe what we see. But if you have encountered this image before, you know that it is the famous Müller-Lyer illusion. As you can easily verify with a ruler, the two lines are in fact exactly the same length. Once you have measured them, you—your System 2, the conscious being you call 'I'—hold a new belief: you know the lines are equal. (...) You have chosen to trust the measurement, but you cannot stop System 1 from doing what it always does. You cannot will yourself to perceive the lines as equal, even though you know they are."
In the Blink of an Eye
Journalist and media thinker Malcolm Gladwell, best known for his influential book The Tipping Point, likewise explores the speed and automatic nature of human thought in relation to visual perception. In Blink -The Power of Thinking without Thinking, he focuses on the astonishing speed of first impressions. The book is devoted to the intuitive mechanisms behind human decision-making. Gladwell argues that we make many of our decisions within the first two seconds—in the blink of an eye—and that these unconscious, intuitive judgments are often remarkably accurate.According to Gladwell, during the first moments of any situation, the brain is able to "thin-slice" reality, extracting precisely the information most relevant for making a decision. The longer we deliberate, however, the more this ability begins to deteriorate. We start incorporating additional information—including irrelevant details—and become increasingly susceptible to poor judgments. Gladwell's conclusion is simple: we should place greater trust in fast thinking, first impressions, and our intuition.
Incidentally, researchers at the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information found that online videos are watched for an average of just 2.7 seconds. Within those first two seconds—in the blink of an eye—we decide whether to keep watching or move on. Most videos are abandoned after only 2.7 seconds.
The Influence of Images
Although Kahneman and Gladwell approach the subject from different perspectives, both emphasize the extraordinary power of visual perception in shaping fast thinking—and, by extension, the immense influence of images. Images are snapshots fired directly into the brain. Unlike text, which primarily engages System 2, images enjoy almost exclusive access to System 1. In fact, the human brain can process images up to 60,000 times faster than text.
Within just 150 milliseconds, an image travels from the eye through the cornea and lens to the retina, where it is projected upside down before being transmitted through the optic nerve to the visual cortex. There, specialized neurons identify shapes, contrasts, colors, and motion. Finally, higher visual cortical areas compare this information with our accumulated experiences, organize it into meaningful patterns, interpret it, and deliver a coherent understanding of what we are seeing.
